How To WRITE A MONOLOGUE
Apex Drama Tools
Guided Notes
Key concepts students will learn:
- •
When writing a monologue, it's important to write more than what's necessary and then refine it through re-reading, speaking aloud, and editing.
- •
To help with writing, try setting time constraints and writing continuously without stopping to overthink, or use the 'Four Emotions' exercise by exploring anger, fear, hope, and shame.
- •
Other helpful exercises include using a memory and modifying it for a character, writing from the perspective of a villain, copying the style of a writer, or using the alphabet to start each new sentence.
- •
Consider writing a monologue in the form of a letter, listing character memories, and then cutting unnecessary bits to make it fit within 60 seconds.
