When adding or subtracting fractions, you combine or compare parts of a whole. Imagine you have 1/2 of a pizza and a friend has 1/4. To find the total, you cannot simply add the numerators because the pieces are different sizes. This is why finding a common denominator is an essential first step. It ensures you are working with same-sized pieces.
A common denominator is a number that both original denominators can divide into evenly. The easiest common denominator is often the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. For instance, when adding 1/2 and 1/4, the LCM of 2 and 4 is 4. You must change 1/2 into an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 4. Multiply both the numerator and denominator of 1/2 by 2, making it 2/4.
Now, with both fractions (2/4 and 1/4) having the same denominator, you can easily add or subtract their numerators. For addition, 2/4 + 1/4 equals 3/4. For subtraction, 2/4 - 1/4 would equal 1/4. The denominator remains unchanged because you are still referring to the same-sized pieces. Always check if your final answer can be simplified to its lowest terms. Mastering this process helps solve many real-world problems.
