Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Fractions are parts of a whole, but sometimes those parts aren't the same size. When adding or subtracting fractions, it's important that they have the same denominator, which is the bottom number of the fraction. If the denominators are different, we need to find a common denominator before we can add or subtract.
Let's say you want to add 1/2 and 1/4. The denominators are 2 and 4, which are not the same. To find a common denominator, we need to find a number that both 2 and 4 divide into evenly. In this case, 4 works well because 2 goes into 4 two times, and 4 goes into 4 one time.
Now, we need to change 1/2 so that it has a denominator of 4. To do this, we multiply both the numerator (top number) and the denominator by the same number. Since we want to change the denominator from 2 to 4, we multiply by 2. So, 1/2 becomes (1x2)/(2x2) = 2/4.
Now we can add 2/4 and 1/4. Since the denominators are the same, we simply add the numerators: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
Subtraction works the same way. If you want to subtract 1/3 from 1/2, you first need to find a common denominator. In this case, 6 works because both 2 and 3 divide into 6. Convert 1/2 to 3/6 and 1/3 to 2/6. Then subtract the numerators: 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6. Remember, always make sure the denominators are the same before adding or subtracting fractions!
