Key Battles of the Civil War

The Civil War (1861-1865) was fought between the United States of America (the Union) and the Confederate States of America. Several major battles shaped the course and outcome of this conflict.

The First Battle of Bull Run (July 1861) was an early Confederate victory that showed the Union the war would not be easily won. In 1862, the Battle of Antietam became the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. Though a tactical draw, it led President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863) is considered a turning point. The Union victory here, in Pennsylvania, marked the high-water mark of the Confederacy. Simultaneously, the Union secured control of the Mississippi River after the Siege of Vicksburg, splitting the Confederacy in two.

In 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman led his “March to the Sea,” devastating Confederate infrastructure and morale. The war effectively ended with the surrender of General Robert E. Lee’s army at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. These key battles, among others, determined the fate of the nation.
