Counting by 10s Starting Anywhere

Skip counting by 10s is a useful math skill. It helps us understand number patterns and count faster. This means you repeatedly add 10 to a starting number to create a sequence. Many people learn to skip count from numbers like 10, 20, 30. But this skill is even more helpful when you can start from any number.

When you skip count by 10s, you will notice a clear pattern. The digit in the ones place usually stays the same. For example, if you start at 5, your sequence would be 5, 15, 25, 35, and so on. The ones digit, which is 5, stays the same. The tens digit, however, increases by one with each step. This steady change makes it easy to know the next number.

If you start with a number like 12, you simply add 10 each time: 12, 22, 32, 42, 52. The ones digit (2) does not change. This pattern works even when you go past a hundred, such as from 97 to 107, then 117. The ones digit remains 7, while the tens and hundreds numbers change as needed.
