Reading Passage

The Diary of Anne Frank

Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, lived in Amsterdam during World War II. As the Nazis rose to power, Anne's family, like many others, faced increasing persecution. To escape the horrors of the Holocaust, the Frank family went into hiding in a secret annex behind her father's business. For over two years, Anne, her parents, her sister Margot, and four other people lived in cramped quarters, trying to remain undetected.

During this time, Anne kept a diary, which became a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. In her diary, she recorded her thoughts, feelings, and experiences as a teenager living in constant fear. She wrote about her hopes for the future, her dreams of becoming a writer, and her observations about the world around her. The diary reveals Anne's intelligence, wit, and unwavering optimism, even in the face of unimaginable adversity.

Tragically, in 1944, the secret annex was discovered, and the Franks were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen just months before the war ended. After the war, Anne's father, Otto Frank, the only surviving member of the family, published her diary. It has since been translated into dozens of languages and read by millions of people around the world, ensuring that Anne's voice continues to be heard.
