Simple, Compound, Complex Sentences | Learning English
Guided Notes
3 key concepts
- 1
A simple sentence contains one independent clause, meaning it has a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought.
- 2
Compound sentences combine two or more independent clauses, often joined by coordinating conjunctions such as those remembered by the acronym FANBOYS.
- 3
Complex sentences consist of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses; a comma is needed when the dependent clause begins the sentence.
