Reading Passage
Physical and Chemical Properties
Substances are identified and categorized by their properties. These properties can be physical or chemical. Physical properties are those that can be observed without changing the substance's chemical identity. Examples include color, density, melting point, and boiling point. Density, for instance, is a physical property that relates a substance's mass to its volume. Malleability, the ability to be hammered into thin sheets, and ductility, the ability to be drawn into wires, are also physical properties.
Chemical properties describe how a substance reacts with other substances. Flammability, the ability to burn, is a chemical property. For example, hydrogen gas is highly flammable, reacting with oxygen to produce water and release energy. Reactivity with acids or bases is another chemical property. Some metals react readily with acids, while others are resistant.
Understanding both physical and chemical properties is crucial for predicting how a substance will behave under different conditions. Knowing the melting point of a metal allows engineers to determine the temperatures at which it can be used in construction. Knowing the chemical reactivity of a substance helps chemists design safe and effective chemical processes. By analyzing these properties, scientists can make informed decisions about the use and handling of various materials.
