Learning Objective
I can describe how crabs use their senses to find plankton near the ocean floor.
- 1
Plankton, from the Greek word for wanderer, are plants and animals that drift through the ocean.
- 2
Phytoplankton are plant-like organisms powered by the sun through photosynthesis, producing at least half of the oxygen we breathe.
- 3
Some plankton, like squat lobsters, only spend the first part of their life as plankton before settling on the sea floor, while others, like moon jellyfish, start on the ocean bottom before becoming planktonic nomads as adults.
