Penguin Adaptations

6th Grade44 minutes

Learning Objective

I can describe the physical and behavioral adaptations that allow penguins to survive in their environment.

Key Concepts

Penguins are easily recognized by their coloring: all penguins have white bellies and a dark or black back.

Instead of wings for flying, penguins have flippers, and they spend so much time in the water that we say they are aquatic.

Penguins have thick layers of blubber or fat that keeps them warm, as well as feathers that are packed tightly together to insulate them.

2. Why can't penguins fly, even though they're birds?

3. Imagine you're a penguin trying to avoid becoming lunch for a hungry seal. How does your coloring help you?
