Chip load is the amount of material that should be cut with each revolution to remove heat from the bit.

If RPMs are too high and the feed rate is too slow, the bit may not cut enough material per revolution, causing heat to remain in the bit and making it dull.

When a bit doesn't cut enough material, it rubs against the wood, creating a high-pitched sound and causing more heat.
