Reading Passage

Leukocytes: Defenders of the Body

Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are crucial components of the immune system, defending the body against infection and disease. Unlike red blood cells, leukocytes are nucleated and capable of moving outside the bloodstream to reach sites of infection.

There are five main types of leukocytes: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Each type plays a distinct role in immune defense. Neutrophils are the most abundant and act as first responders, engulfing and destroying bacteria and cellular debris through phagocytosis. Lymphocytes include T cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. T cells orchestrate immune responses and directly kill infected cells. B cells produce antibodies, specialized proteins that recognize and neutralize foreign invaders. NK cells target and eliminate virus-infected and cancerous cells.

Monocytes differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells. Macrophages are phagocytic cells that engulf pathogens and present antigens to T cells, initiating adaptive immune responses. Dendritic cells also capture antigens and present them to T cells, bridging the innate and adaptive immune systems. Eosinophils target parasites and are involved in allergic reactions, releasing toxic substances to kill pathogens. Basophils release histamine and other chemicals that promote inflammation, contributing to allergic responses and fighting parasitic infections. The coordinated action of these leukocytes ensures a robust and adaptable immune response.
