Ocean ecosystems are vast, intricate webs of life, supporting immense biodiversity and providing critical planetary services. Their health and resilience are influenced by complex natural processes and, increasingly, anthropogenic factors. Analyzing these influences is paramount for effective conservation.

Climate change is a primary factor. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide leads to ocean warming, stressing marine organisms and causing coral bleaching. Concurrently, increased CO2 absorption results in ocean acidification, reducing carbonate ions vital for shell formation in calcifying organisms, impacting food webs and habitat structures.

Pollution also poses a significant threat. Plastic debris and chemical pollutants accumulate, harming wildlife via entanglement, ingestion, and toxicity. Nutrient runoff from agriculture creates hypoxic "dead zones" where oxygen levels are too low for most marine life, severely reducing local biodiversity.

Overfishing depletes fish stocks, disrupting trophic cascades and altering ecosystem structure. Destructive fishing practices further damage critical habitats. Habitat destruction, like clearing mangrove forests, removes vital nursery grounds and protective barriers, diminishing biodiversity and ecosystem services.
