Reading Passage
Successes and Failures of Reconstruction
Reconstruction, the period after the Civil War (1865-1877), aimed to rebuild the South and integrate formerly enslaved people into society. Reconstruction policies achieved some notable successes. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the 14th Amendment granted citizenship and equal protection under the law, and the 15th Amendment prohibited denying voting rights based on race. Black men were elected to political offices at all levels, demonstrating newfound political participation.
However, Reconstruction also faced significant failures. White southerners resisted federal intervention and the advancement of Black rights. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan used violence and intimidation to suppress Black voters and maintain white supremacy. The sharecropping system trapped many Black families in cycles of debt and poverty, limiting their economic freedom. The Compromise of 1877, which removed federal troops from the South, effectively ended Reconstruction and ushered in an era of Jim Crow laws, which legalized segregation and disenfranchisement. While Reconstruction laid the groundwork for future civil rights advancements, its promise of equality remained largely unfulfilled.
