The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were Reconstruction policies that respectively abolished slavery, granted citizenship and equal protection, and prohibited race-based voting restrictions.

During Reconstruction, Black men were elected to political offices, which demonstrated newfound political participation for African Americans.

The Ku Klux Klan used violence to suppress Black voters, and the sharecropping system trapped Black families in debt, limiting the success of Reconstruction.
