Guided Notes

3 key concepts

  • 1

Simplifying a fraction means rewriting it using the smallest top and bottom numbers possible without changing the value of the fraction.

  • 2

To simplify fractions: First, replace the top and bottom numbers with their prime factors. Then, cancel any common factors. Finally, re-multiply any remaining factors.

  • 3

If you cancel out all factors on the top of a fraction, remember to put a 1 in its place, because 1 is always a factor of any number.
