Solving Simple Equations
Let’s learn about equations! An equation is like a number sentence that shows two things are equal. It uses an equal sign (=).
For example, 2 + 3 = 5 is an equation. The plus sign (+) means we add. The equal sign (=) means that what’s on one side is the same as what’s on the other side.
We can also have subtraction equations. The minus sign (-) means we take away. For example, 5 - 2 = 3 is an equation.
Sometimes, there’s a missing number in the equation. We can use a box to show the missing number. For example: 2 + ☐ = 5. What number goes in the box to make the equation true? If you said 3, you’re right! Because 2 + 3 = 5.
Let's try another one: 7 - ☐ = 4. What number goes in the box? If you said 3, you're right! Because 7 - 3 = 4. Solving equations is like being a number detective!
