Solving Math Problems
Let's use math to solve problems! Word problems tell us a story. We can use plus or minus to find the answer.
Maria has 8 stickers. Her friend gives her 5 more. How many stickers does Maria have now? We can add 8 + 5. Count up from 8: nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. Maria has 13 stickers!
Tom has 12 toy cars. He gives 4 cars to his little brother. How many cars does Tom have left? We can subtract 12 - 4. Count back from 12: eleven, ten, nine, eight. Tom has 8 cars left!
Sarah baked 15 cookies. She ate 3 cookies. How many cookies are left? We can subtract 15 - 3. That means Sarah has 12 cookies left for her friends.
David has 7 balloons. Lisa has 6 balloons. How many balloons do they have together? We can add 7 + 6. David and Lisa have 13 balloons in all!
