Verbs that do not follow the regular rules of grammar when changing from present to past tense are called irregular verbs.

Sometimes, changing a vowel changes the tense of the word, like when the word 'come' becomes came or 'begin' becomes began.

Sometimes the whole word changes entirely, like when 'eat' becomes ate, 'be' becomes was or were, or 'go' becomes went.
