Reading Passage
Vaping: Risks to Your Body
Vaping, often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, poses significant health risks. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine and other harmful chemicals by heating a liquid to create an aerosol that users inhale. This aerosol can damage various parts of the body.
The lungs are particularly vulnerable. Vaping can cause irreversible lung damage, leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and increasing the risk of asthma. The aerosol irritates and inflames lung tissue, impairing its ability to function properly. Some studies have also linked vaping to bronchiolitis obliterans, a severe lung disease.
Cardiovascular health is also at risk. Nicotine, regardless of its delivery method, elevates blood pressure and heart rate, increasing the likelihood of heart attack and stroke. The ultrafine particles in e-cigarette aerosol can also damage blood vessels, contributing to cardiovascular disease.
Beyond the lungs and heart, vaping can negatively impact brain development, especially in adolescents. Nicotine is highly addictive and can impair cognitive function, attention, and memory. The chemicals in e-cigarette liquids can also harm the developing brain.
Finally, vaping exposes users to harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and acrolein, which are known carcinogens. While research is ongoing, early evidence suggests that vaping may increase the risk of certain cancers. The long-term health consequences of vaping are still emerging, but the existing evidence paints a concerning picture.
