Reading Passage

Finding the Theme of a Story

Every story has a theme. The theme is the big idea or message the author wants to share. It's not the same as the plot, which is just what happens in the story. Instead, the theme is what the story is really about.

To find the theme, think about what the characters learn or how they change. What problems do they face, and what lessons do they learn from those problems? Sometimes the theme is stated directly, but often you have to figure it out by looking closely at the details.

For example, imagine a story about a young girl who is afraid to try new things. Throughout the story, she faces challenges that force her to step outside her comfort zone. By the end, she realizes that trying new things can be exciting and rewarding. The theme of this story might be the importance of courage or the value of embracing new experiences.

To support your ideas about a theme, you need to find evidence in the text. Look for specific moments, conversations, or descriptions that show the theme in action. When you can point to these details, you can show that your understanding of the theme is based on what the author actually wrote.
