Learning Objective
I can identify three functions of the male reproductive system.
- 1
The testes are located outside of the body in the scrotum because sperm production requires a lower temperature than core body temperature.
- 2
Spermatogonia are stem cells in the outermost layer of the seminiferous tubules that divide to produce spermatocytes, which undergo meiosis to form spermatids.
- 3
The seminal vesicles secrete a fluid containing fructose and prostaglandins to nourish sperm, decrease the viscosity of cervical mucus, and trigger reverse peristalsis in the uterus.
