Before writing an essay, use scratch paper to plan and outline your response.

A good default format for an essay on a test is the five-paragraph essay, which includes an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Instead of restating the prompt, your introduction should include an interesting focus statement that covers the prompt in your own words, and your conclusion should synthesize your main points.
