Quotation Marks in Dialogue

Direct speech shows the exact words someone said, while indirect speech reports what was said without using the exact words.

In narratives, reports, and newspaper articles, speech marks, also known as quotation marks, are used to indicate direct speech instead of speech bubbles.

When direct speech begins a sentence, the comma goes inside the speech marks; when it ends the sentence, the comma is placed outside the speech marks.
