What Inspired Haydn's Creation

Joseph Haydn's renowned oratorio, "The Creation," drew inspiration from several key sources. During his visits to London in the 1790s, Haydn heard grand oratorios by George Frideric Handel, especially "Messiah." He was profoundly impressed by their scale and public appeal. This experience sparked in Haydn a desire to compose his own large-scale sacred work, one that would glorify God and deeply affect audiences.

Upon returning to Vienna, Haydn received a libretto, or text, for an oratorio. This text, originally prepared for Handel, combined elements from the biblical Book of Genesis and John Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost." These narratives describe the world's creation. Haydn was captivated by depicting the universe's formation through music—from initial chaos to the emergence of light, life, and humanity.

The intellectual spirit of the Enlightenment also shaped Haydn's vision. This era emphasized reason, order, and the inherent beauty of the natural world, often viewed as a reflection of divine wisdom.
