Guided Notes
3 key concepts
- 1
During stage two (N2) sleep, EEGs show K complexes, which involve a large negative wave followed by a large positive wave, and sleep spindles, which are brief bursts of 12 to 14 hertz waves; an example of this is when someone is sleeping lightly and may still react to external stimuli.
- 2
Adaptation theories suggest we evolved to sleep at night because it's dark and dangerous, leading to the development of circadian rhythms, which are cyclical waking and sleeping patterns correlating with daytime and nighttime; an example of this is how humans tend to sleep at night and are awake during the day.
- 3
Sleep deprivation can lead to increased sleepiness, a negative impact on mood, and decreases in basic motor function and responsiveness to stimuli; for example, someone who consistently sleeps only three or four hours a night may experience these effects.
